About

The universe, as far as we can observe it, is a wonderful and immense engine.”
- George Santayana (1863-1952), writer and philosopher.

Welcome. My name is Ian O’Neill, founder and editor of Astroengine. If you have any problems with this site, have a story you think I might be interested in, or just want to say “hi”, please fill out my online contact form or send me an email: ijo(at)astroengine.com

Who am I?

I’m the Space Science Producer for Discovery News, so if things go quiet over here on Astroengine, you can find hundreds of articles of mine over there too. Although I work for the Discovery Channel’s sci-tech news website, working for the media came as a surprise.

In 2006, I was awarded my PhD in Solar Physics (at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth), but when I moved to the US, I dabbled in science blogging and journalism. With some amazing fortune, I started writing for Fraser Cain at the Universe Today and from there, in 2009, I was offered the producing position at Discovery News.

It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but to cut a long story short, I’m now married to the beautiful Debra, I’m a slave to 5 rabbits (plus a hamster called Kahlua) and we all live in sunny Woodland Hills, near Los Angeles, Calif.
